All About Cremation

All About Cremation

Many people are choosing to cremate, but that doesn’t mean they have to sacrifice the healing, traditional elements of a burial. Let us help you create a memorial onsite — because it’s helpful for many families to have a physical marker of remains. We can provide a range of flowers and décor accessories so you can best reflect your loved one at a service and much beyond. An onsite memorial becomes a place to commemorate a life and gather beyond the home, at a permanent and meaningful location In addition, please know you can bring remains to the cemetery any time, even long after cremation.

What Local Families say about our Cremation Services

CREMATION COST VS TRADITIONAL FUNERALS

CREMATION COST VS TRADITIONAL FUNERALS

Your funeral director can work with you to make traditional burial as economical as possible. There are times, however, when cremation services can cost less. Several factors influence this difference, including cemetery costs, such as burial plot purchase, the need for an outer burial container and permanent memorial. You should know that cremation does not limit the types of funeral services that are available to you. Viewings, gatherings, visitations, memorial services and celebrations of life are all still possible when cremation is selected as a final means of disposition.

CREMATION COSTS & PRICES

Our all inclusive cremation service pricing ensures you will receive services that are ‘extras’ at other funeral homes, such as:

Cremation Q & A

We encourage families to remember that cremation is an alternative to burial, but does not limit the type of services or remembrances in any way. Cremation in Maryland can occur prior to or following a service or gathering. We often receive questions about cremation. If we haven’t answered yours, please call or email the funeral home for more information.

What is cremation?

Cremation is a process in which the physical remains of the deceased are reduced by the prolonged application of heat. After the cremated remains are removed from the cremation chamber, they are processed into finer fragments and placed within a temporary container. Once a cremation urn has been selected, the funeral home will transfer the remains.

Where does cremation take place?

A special building called a crematorium or crematory contains the cremation chamber or retort. Fleegle and Helfenbein Funeral Home oversees a family owned crematory on the Eastern Shore that performs only one cremation at a time.

Is a casket required?

A casket is not required, however the remains must be placed within a rigid combustible container to meet crematory requirements. You may make a selection that fits your requirements and budget from our wide variety of offerings.

Do we need to have a funeral if we select cremation?

Cremation does not in any way limit the services that may be provided for the deceased. Some families elect to have a full funeral service for their loved one prior to cremation. Others choose to honor their loved ones in alternative ways, such as with a procession to the crematory and using our Urn Arch.

What is an urn?

An cremation urn is a container meant to hold cremated remains or ashes. Some urns are meant to be permanent, and others are biodegradable or in some other way specially designed for scattering of ashes. Urns come in a wide variety of materials and can often be engraved or otherwise customized to reflect your life story. They’re also available in different sizes so that family members may each have a portion of the remains to keep with them.

What can be done with cremated remains?

  • Burial: The cremated remains may be buried in the ground in a cemetery plot.
  • Inurnment: Inurnment occurs when the urn is placed in an above ground columbarium niche.
  • Scattering: Care should be exercised when scattering cremated remains or ashes. Some Eastern Shore cemeteries provide a special area on their property meant for scattering of ashes. Written permission should be secured before scattering on private or public property in the state of Maryland. Remember that property can be sold, so your access to visit the site may be terminated if this happens. There are additional regulations that govern the scattering of remains on waterways, so please check with your funeral professional for the most up to date information.
  • Shipping: You may want to have the cremated remains shipped to another country, or you may wish to take them yourself. We can oversee the shipment and help to provide you with the most current information regarding air travel and cremated remains.
  • Keeping: Many people prefer to have the urn at home with them.

Is cremation cheaper than burial?

In every case, the cost of the services provided depends on the decisions that are made. Often, the cost of a cemetery plot may exceed the cost of cremation. There are, however other fees which may apply, such as a coroner’s authorization for cremation, the purchase of an urn, or delivery costs to ship an urn to the final destination. We encourage you to call the funeral home to ask about your specific plans and how they can be achieved within your budget.

YOU CAN NEVER GO BACK AND DO A CREMATION OVER

Some say it’s harsh to remind you of this, but we know we must. We want you to honor your loved one in a way that allows you to look back, years from now, and be thankful that you did the best you could to honor their life. Creating a cremation service that calls together the hearts and minds of all who loved them is a gift to everyone involved. A gift of memories, a gift of healing...a truly priceless gift of peace-of-mind.
