George Wesley Clough

December 25, 1927 - December 2, 2016

George Wesley Clough, 88, a lifelong resident of Marydel, MD passed away on December 2, 2016. The only son of the late George Lacy and Matilda Tharpe Clough, he was born on Christmas Day in 1927 in Marydel and grew up with four sisters. From a young age, George was an incredibly hard worker and left school early to help care for his family. In his 20's George and his father cleared land and built a home where he would later raise a family. In his late 20's he met and fell in love with Alice Marie Blanchfield; they married in a small but lovely ceremony on February 24, 1958. George and Alice had three children, Debra, Andrew and Randy; he was a loving father who would repair and paint bikes for his children and loved to sing them the song "You Are My Sunshine". George was a big music fan and loved listening to hymns and bluegrass music, especially Lester Flatt, Earl Scruggs and Bill Monroe. Each year he and Alice would pack a picnic and head to Sunset Park with their children for the bluegrass festival. One of his favorite tunes was Worried Man by The Kingston Trio and could often be heard singing it. George had a green thumb and had a large garden made up of a variety of beans including pole, string, lima and calico. Over the years he had several jobs working for Chrysler and as a mechanic but his favorite job was that of a grandfather. He was known as Pop-Pop to his two grandchildren Vanessa Marie Leach and Jason Foster Stevens and great grandchildren Rose Leach and Christopher Leach and held a special place in his heart for each of them. George believed in never being wasteful and in the old adage that a penny saved was a penny earned. He will be lovingly remember by his wife Alice, daughter Debra, sons Andrew and Randy, sister Etta Gusferson, grandchildren and great grandchildren.
