Catherine Flossie Mathilda Cherry

November 12, 1920 - August 9, 2016

Catherine Councell Cherry passed away peacefully on Tuesday, August 09, 2016 in her home at the age of 95. She was born in Cordova, MD on November 12, 1920. She was the daughter of the late William Sherman Councell, Sr and Flossie M. Plugge Councell. After graduating from Church Hill High School in 1936, she continued her education at Westminster College in teaching. She taught for several years in Greenbelt, Cordova, and Centreville. Catherine married the late Charles Elwood Cherry on February 4, 1944 in Ridgely, MD. She worked at a Chestertown munitions plant during WWI and also taught soldiers grammar after the war. Together, Catherine and her husband ran C. Elwood Cherry Watchmaker & Jeweler in Ridgely while raising a family. After retirement, she continued her education at Chesapeake College and volunteered at the Caroline Center. Some of her hobbies were gardening, crafting, and collecting. Over the years, Mrs. Cherry was a member of Questers, 4-H Club, Hobo Society, Red Hat Club, and the Baby Doll Club. Every year on Mother�s Day she would pick lady slippers with her son, Myron. Go to the Woods Day was another yearly adventure enjoyed and shared by her with many family and friends. Catherine is survived her by son, G. Myron Cherry, son-in-law, Dennis Glover, brother, Rodney Councell, sister, Faye Polillo, grand-daughters, Shannon Gunderson, Jessica Trump, and Laura Coxon, two step-grandchildren, and many cousins, nieces, nephews, and great-grandchildren whom she loved dearly. Mrs. Cherry is preceded in death by her husband, Charles Elwood Cherry, daughter, Martha Cherry Glover, sister Helen Councell Mallalieu, brother Palmer Councell, brother William Sherman Councell, brother Michael Councell, and grandson Dennis L. Glover, II. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Chesapeake College Foundation at P.O. Box 8, Wye Mills, MD 21679. She always stressed the importance of an education and would love to see others benefit from the experience. A private graveside service will be at 11:00 AM at the Greensboro Cemetery.
